Pairing the right shaft with the right head and the right settings can completely change the confidence you bring to the tee box.

The best part about today’s drivers and fairway woods is that all you need is a torque wrench to change a shaft on a golf club.

I went through a stretch of golf when I feared the driver. Then I got the brand new (at the time) Ping G425 Max driver. I got the settings dialed in perfectly for my tendencies and before long there wasn’t a single tee shot I feared.

During that time, I was constantly tinkering with shafts, and by the time that driver went kaput, I had four different shafts equipped with the Ping adapter that I could swap in at a moment's notice.

While knowing how to change a golf shaft is easy, it takes some careful planning to make sure you have all the right parts. Here’s how to change a golf shaft for a driver or fairway woods.

What You'll Need

Everything you need to know about how to change a golf shaft on an adapter-equipped driver starts with two things: a new shaft with the correct adapter, and the torque wrench that came with your club. Since the head, adapter, and torque wrench are all brand-specific (Titleist, Callaway, PING, TaylorMade, etc., each use a unique adapter), all those components must be part of the same system for everything to fit together.

Fortunately, brands don’t change those components very often.

You can also use a shaft with no adapter, which works whether you’re reshafting a driver that doesn’t use an adapter, or you need to add the adapter to fit your driver. In those cases, you can either install it yourself with relative ease, or take it to a professional to avoid a potentially expensive mistake. We’ll cover both of those options in full detail shortly.

Adapters vs. No Adapter: Know What You Have

When you’re shopping for a pre-owned driver or fairway wood shaft, you’ll notice that many of them come with an adapter already installed. This is part of the convenience of reshafting modern woods. You just have to make sure that you get a shaft with the correct adapter. 

The first step is identifying your head. If you’re unsure, check the head to find the brand and model.

Most adapters are dexterity-specific. Callaway, TaylorMade, and Ping each make right-handed and left-handed versions of their adapters. While a right-handed adapter will fit a left-handed head from the same brand and era, the adjustment settings will not align with what’s printed on the adapter. Titleist’s SureFit adapter is the exception, as Titleist uses the same physical adapter for right and left-handed heads. 

Here’s a quick rundown of the most common adapters, and which heads they fit:

No adapter: If there’s no screw on the sole of your driver where the shaft meets the head, then the head is fixed (also referred to as bonded), but you can still reshaft it. Search shafts with no adapter to find the shaft you want. Then take it and the club to a builder. It’s too easy to destroy a graphite shaft beyond repair if you try to remove it yourself without the proper tools or experience (I’ve done it more than once), so I don’t recommend doing it yourself if the head is bonded.

Titleist SureFit (2010 - Present): Titleist has one of the most adaptable adapter systems in the industry. With one small exception, Titleist drivers, fairway woods, and hybrids have used the same SureFit adapter since late 2010 with the 910 series. The exception being that 910 hybrid and fairway wood adapters are not compatible with 913 and newer heads.

TaylorMade Loft Sleeve (2013 - Present): TaylorMade has used the same loft sleeve since the 2013 release of its R1 driver. If you’re reshafting a TaylorMade driver from 2013 or later, then the standard modern loft sleeve is compatible. TaylorMade’s loft sleeve allows for two degrees of adjustability of loft and lie in either direction of the standard spec.

TaylorMade marks the dexterity right on the adapter with an RH or an LH.

Callaway OptiFit (2013 - Present): Callaway’s current OptiFit driver adapter is compatible with all adjustable Callaway drivers dating back to 2013’s Razr Fit Xtreme and OptiForce drivers. 

Woods and hybrids, however, are a different story. Callaway updated its adapter for woods and hybrids to OptiFit 3 in 2019 and OptiFit 4 in 2026. Those adapters are not backward compatible.

On left-handed Callaway adapters, the settings on the cogs are underlined, and on right-handed adapters, they’re not. One bonus of Callaway’s OptiFit system is that even when you change the settings, the grip stays aligned precisely the way it was installed.

Here’s how to find the right Callaway adapter for your head. If you have a:

  • Callaway driver from 2013 to present: Optifit or Optifit 2 adapter fits all full-sized driver heads and all Callaway mini drivers except the 2026 Quantum Mini.

  • Callaway fairway wood from 2013 to 2018: Optifit or Optifit 2 adapters fit interchangeably

  • Callaway fairway wood from 2019 to 2025: Optifit 3 adapter fits

  • Callaway Quantum fairway wood or Quantum Mini Driver from 2026: Optifit 4 adapter required

Ping G410 Adapter (2019-2024): Ping has used a few different adapters through the years. The most popular adapter is the one Ping used from 2019 to 2024 on the G410, G425 and G430 lineups. The adapter allows up to 1.5 degrees of loft adjustment in either direction, plus a Flat setting with neutral, +1 or -1 degrees of loft, eight settings in all.

Ping introduced a newer version of this adapter with the 2025 release of its G440 driver, and even though it fits into older heads, and vice-versa, Ping doesn’t recommend it. Since driver heads and shafts aren’t cheap, it’s best to stick with what the manufacturer recommends.

Right-handed Ping adapters are marked with an empty circle, while left-handed versions have a honeycomb pattern in that circle.

Step-by-Step: Removing the Old Shaft

Once you have your new shaft with the proper adapter, installing it is easy. The first step is removing the existing shaft. Just grab the torque wrench that came with the club, and unscrew the screw on the sole of the head until you can pull the head completely off the shaft.

Don’t remove the screw from the club head. You’ll need it to install the new shaft. These screws usually have a small rubber washer or O-ring on the tip (inside the hosel) which keeps the screw connected to the head. Removing the screw can drop that small rubber washer inside the club head. While that doesn’t affect performance, the rattling it causes during the swing is impossible to ignore.

If your club has a bonded head, take it to a builder for any adjustments. Trying to remove the head at home will almost certainly lead to an expensive disaster. 

How to Change a Golf Shaft Step-by-Step: Installing the New Shaft

To install the new shaft, slide the tip into the head, align it to the desired setting, and use the brand-specific torque wrench to tighten the screw until you hear a couple clicks. 

It’s important to use the right torque wrench when installing your driver shaft because it’s designed specifically for your driver and guarantees tightening the head to a perfect hold. Using the wrong wrench risks stripping the screw or damaging the adapter.

Even with the new shaft installed, your job isn’t done. If you’re changing the profile of your shaft (weight, length, flex, trajectory or spin profile), then you should expect to see a change in your ball flight.

With adjustable drivers and fairway woods, you can use the settings available at the hosel – and oftentimes adjustable weights in the head – to fine-tune your ball flight to best suit your needs. The best way to do this is to take the club to a driving range or simulator and adjust one element at a time to find the setting that produces the results you’re looking for (or at least the closest thing to it).

Promotes a fade.

These effects stack. A single adjustment rarely overrides your natural swing path — think of each setting as a nudge, not a fix, and change one variable at a time so you can feel what's actually working.

Installing An Adapter or Fixed Head

If you have a shaft with no adapter, and you want to add the appropriate adapter or install it into a fixed head, you can do so relatively easily. However, graphite shafts can damage easily. If you’re not completely comfortable with the install, just bring it to a club builder.

For this job, you need epoxy, the adapter or club head, and sandpaper.

Step 1: Sand the tip of the shaft just lightly enough to remove the paint. Tape off about the last inch to avoid sanding too far up the shaft. Remove the tape when you’re finished sanding the tip.

Step 2: Mix the epoxy well per the instructions.

Step 3: Use a golf tee to line the inside walls of the adapter or hosel with epoxy. Next, apply epoxy to the top of the shaft by slowly rolling the tip of the shaft in the epoxy.

Step 4: Put the ferrule on the tip of the shaft, then slide the shaft all the way into the adapter or club head. The ferrule should stay flush with the adapter or head. Clean away the excess epoxy from the ferrule and shaft.

Step 5: If you’re using an adapter, line up your preferred setting (or neutral setting if unknown) with the shaft markings. If you’re installing a fixed head, just line up the grip as desired. Then allow at least 24 hours to dry untouched.

When to Take It to a Builder

You don’t want to commit a costly mistake when changing shafts in your driver or woods. Here’s a good rule of thumb to decide what you can handle yourself, and when it’s time to take the project to a club builder: 

  • If you can do it with just a torque wrench, do it yourself. 

  • If there is epoxy or heat involved, take it to a professional.

Yes, we just laid out the fairly straightforward steps for installing an adapter using epoxy, but even that job can tilt the risk-reward scales out of balance when you consider the cost of making an irreversible mistake.

Other jobs, like removing a fixed head from a shaft or removing an adapter from a shaft – both of which require melting the existing epoxy and pulling the shaft without damaging the tip – are almost guaranteed to end in disaster when attempted by inexperienced DIYers not using the proper tools.

The good news is, these repairs usually cost the same as a box of balls, and you can sleep easy knowing that the job will get done right.

The Difference a Shaft Can Make
