If you play a set that’s ½-inch over standard, that measurement is relative to the specific standard length listed for that set.

Your height is the easiest – and therefore it’s naturally the less optimal – of the two.
Standard length clubs are loosely built for men between 5-foot-9 and 6-feet tall, or women roughly 5-foot-4 to 5-foot-7.

As you can see, gauging golf shaft length based on height alone is no guarantee to find the right length. The length of your arms plays an equally important role.
How Swing Affects Golf Shaft Length
Most golfers don’t give a second thought to golf shaft length, but the truth is that the length of your shaft influences almost every element of your golf swing.
Changing golf shaft length alone has a ripple effect that influences:

The shaft length logic starts to get counterintuitive when we get to swing speed. If a longer shaft creates more speed, why do so many PGA Tour players use drivers that are shorter than standard? The simple answer is, swing speed is only good if you can convert it into ball speed.
Center strikes are the easiest way to maximize ball speed. When the shaft gets too long, it becomes more difficult to hit the center consistently, which not only reduces overall ball speed but makes distance, shot shape, and dispersion much less predictable.
Standard driver length off the rack is usually 45.5 inches, but the average PGA Tour driver length is closer to 44.5 inches. Players who get paid to play their best frequently choose to play drivers that are about an inch shorter than standard. That should tell you all you need to know about the diminishing returns of longer shafts and more swing speed.
Unlike a consistent miss on the toe or heel side, which often points to a lie angle issue, a strike pattern that’s all over the face is a good sign that the shaft is simply too long to control consistently.
